The Club · Est. 1848

A haven of tranquillity in the heart of town.

Our beautiful building has a rich history, and the Club has called the Royal Square home since 1848. Founded as a gentlemen’s club, today it welcomes ladies and gentlemen alike to meet friends, network, lunch, or simply relax and read the paper with a coffee.

Whether you are looking for a quiet corner to read, a space to work or a lively social evening, our elegant and comfortable rooms are made for both relaxation and productivity. There is high speed Wi-Fi and comfortable seating in the Long Room, private meeting rooms, the new Heavey Room for working, and a beautiful balcony overlooking the Royal Square.

Our members are the heart of our Club. We look forward to welcoming you, and to helping you make the most of your time with us.

New for 2026 · The Heavey Room

Your office, on the Royal Square.

The old snooker room has been reborn as the Heavey Room: a co-working space for members by day, and a room for talks, meetings and private events by night.

Bring a laptop, take a call in a wing chair by the fire, or spread out at the partners’ desk. Coffee and lunch are a few steps away, and the rest of the Club is yours when the work is done. Members chose its name by ballot, after the playwright Yvonne Heavey.

Dining

Cooked fresh, every day, on the premises.

Our chef prepares every meal in the Club’s own kitchen, so the quality and taste are always the best they can be. We serve lunch to members and their guests, with coffee and drinks throughout the day.

Members enjoy discounted rates on drinks and on hot and cold snacks at the bar. Larger lunch parties and dinner parties can be arranged in advance.

Heritage

A building older than the Club itself.

The story of our home on the Royal Square begins with a corn market in 1669, almost two centuries before the Club was founded.

  1. 1669

A corn market, and a house above it

Suzanne Dumaresq, Dame de La Haule, was given permission to build the Halle à blé corn market at her own expense, in exchange for the right to build her own town house above.

  2. 1672

    The Long Room

The building was completed, and a large room known as the Long Room was later let out for public meetings.

  3. 1787

    A preacher, and a stage

John Wesley preached here, and the building was used to stage some of Jersey’s first theatrical performances.

  4. 1831

    The arches are hidden

The building was more modest than it is today, but it already had the ground floor extension that hides the old corn market arches.

  5. 1848

    The United Club is founded

The Club was established as a gentlemen’s club, a tranquil retreat in the heart of St Helier.

  6. 1932

    A home of its own

The Club took over the premises, buying the property at the most reasonable price of £4,000, an amount raised by debentures at 2½ per cent.

  7. 2020

    Ladies welcome

Members voted to welcome ladies as members, on the same terms as gentlemen.

  8. 2026

    The Heavey Room

The old snooker room reopened as the Heavey Room, a co-working space by day and a venue for meetings and events by night. Members chose its name by ballot, after the playwright Yvonne Heavey.

  9. Today
